a man turns forty

He sees a bit of the wisdom
From those passed before
He sees those who are coming
His children grown and gone
And the sun moving ever faster

He can taste a bit of life
A nurturing to be had
Knowledge of time past
A love of life known
Until now

A realization occurs
Of Time pushing his heels
Of things left undone
And so much left to do

With, finally, the courage to do it

He feels his passion has left him
Yet wonders if he’s ever felt love
And learns that deep in his breast
That the greatest is yet to come
To a jaded heart of melting stone

He looks at the path
He has chosen from Life
He marvels at the twists and turns
And the absolute miracle
That he survived it all.

He turns to prose
And the swish of the pen
For forgiveness
For understanding
For love

The puzzle begins to create
A picture, an abstract finality
He finally begins to understand
What it truly means, to be
A man turning forty
